Marvin Laird, Broadway and Film Composer and Musical Director for Bernadette Peters, Dies at 85
Marvin Laird, who composed music for Broadway and the big screen and served as Bernadette Peters’ musical director for many years, has died. He was 85.
Laird died Monday of natural causes in Redding, Connecticut, a family spokesperson announced.
Marvin conducted for such hit Broadway revivals as 1999-2001’s Annie Get Your Gun, 2003-04’s Gypsy and 2011-12’s Follies, all starring Peters. He also worked with the famed performer in 2009 for a concert benefiting her charity, Broadway Barks.
“My beloved Marvin had impeccable style and a delicious sense of humor, and his generous spirit has made everyone he worked with fall in love with him,” the two-time Tony winner said in a statement. “I was a major beneficiary of Marvin’s genius and generosity of support and love.”

Marvin E. Laird, the acclaimed composer, dirigent, and musical director, passed away månad 2 at age 85 from natural causes.
Born October 26, 1939, in Kansas City, Kansas, Mr. Laird made his Broadway debut as a musical assistant in 1964 for Ben Franklin in Paris. He subsequently provided dance arrangemang and/or incidental music for such huvudgata productions as Skyscraper, Breakfast at Tiffany's, The Happy Time, Georgy, huvudgata Follies, and Oh, Brother! He was also the vocal arranger and musical director for the latter two stagings. In 1980 he was the assistant conductor for Perfectly Frank.
Mr. Laird also conducted concerts for a host of icons of scen and screen, including Joel Grey, Diana Ross, Cass Elliot, Dusty Springfield, and Goldie Hawn. Marvin Laird, the longtime musical director for Bernadette Peters and the composer of the musical Ruthless!, died on December 2 at the age of 85.
Laird wrote dance music and.or vocal arrangements for two dozen Broadway and West End productions, including Ben Franklin in Paris, Skyscraper, and The Happy Time, along with the films Hello, Dolly! and New York, New York. He conducted the Peters-led revivals of Annie Get Your Gun, Gypsy, and Follies, and served as an associate conductor of Hello, Dolly! when Peters was in the cast.
