María Cristina García wins Andrew Carnegie Fellowship
María Cristina García, the Howard A. Newman Professor in American Studies at Cornell, is the recipient of a Andrew Carnegie Fellowship, the Carnegie Corporation of New York has announced.
The program supports established and emerging scholars, journalists and authors “whose work distills knowledge, enriches our culture and equips leaders in the realms of education, law, technology, business and public policy,” the foundation said.
García was nominated for the fellowship in November by the late Cornell President Elizabeth Garrett, who called her “one of the foremost experts on immigration history and the impact of displaced peoples on communities, cultures, and political processes and institutions.”

Maria Cristina Garcia is an American historian, currently the Howard A. Newman Professor of American Studies at Cornell University.[1][2][3][4] Her work focuses on the history of displaced and mobile populations in the Americas.
Garcia received her B.A. from Georgetown University and her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin.[5] She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Society of American Historians. She is a recipient of a Andrew Carnegie Fellowship,[6] the Cornell Stephen and Margery Russell Teaching Award,[7] the Kendall S. Carpenter Memorial Advising Award,[8] and the President's and Provost's Award for Excellence in research, Teaching, and Service in Diversity.[9]
