  • Bhubaneswar: A prolific Odia writer, philosopher, teacher and poet, Madhusudan Rao was born January 19, 1853. The social reformer set a milestone and a mark in all of our hearts.

    The very mention of ‘Barnabodha’, that was written by him, makes every Odia nostalgic as we have grown up reading this book. This book was recognized and prescribed by the Education Department and more than one lakh copies were sold from 1947 to 1948.

    Popularly known as ‘Bhaktakabi’, his contribution in the field of education is unforgettable. He was born to Bhagiratha Rao, an employee of Orissa police department at Puri. Bhagiratha Rao brought him up as he lost his mother, Ambika Devi, at the tender age of five.

    Madhusudan Rao was born on 19th January 1853 to a Maharastrian Kshyatriya family in Puri. While his ancestors were from the Maharashtriyan royal family of the Bhonslas from Nagpur,they came to Orissa (now Odisha) during the rule of Marathas. After Orissa was ruled by the British many of these Marathas were left back in Orissa. He was born to one such family. His father was an employee of Orissa police department. He was therefore transferred to different places. As a result Madhusudan Rao had gained education from different schools of Gop, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Puri. He passed FA from Revenshaw College in year 1871. During that period there was no scope for B.A in Orissa. So he had stopped his education from here. He served, as a teacher in various schools from 1871.He became the Deputy Inspector of Education in 1880 when Radhanath Ray was the Inspector.     Madhusudana Pati wrote the 1985 biographical novel “Bhaktakabi Madhusudan Rao: Byaktitwa O Kabitwa” in the Odia language.Popular Odia author and poet Madhusudan Rao was known as Bhaktakabi. He is regarded as the founder of contemporary Odia poetry. His most significant literary contribution to Odia is Prabandhamala. This book, which was initially published in 1880, is regarded as the first collection of essays in Odia. He began his writing career as an essayist before moving on to write poetry and fiction. He translated a few works into the Odia language, with particular attention being paid to Uttararamacarita, a Sanskrit play in seven acts written in the Nataka style by Bhavabhuti. In the 1870s, he and Radhanath Ray collaborated to produce two volumes of the poetry anthology Kabitabali.
