While I love my parents' humble little abode in our sleepy seaside town where an entire day can be spent just playing with the dog and reading a book, this time last year and three summers before that, I was in Venice. So in honor of my previous sojourns to that glorious city on water, I'm going to write about one of my favorite movies (and not just movies set in Venice) - Summertime starring the legendary Katherine Hepburn.



I have an addiction to films about people (okay, mostly women) who undergo personal transformations due to a particular experience. In this movie, Katherine Hepburn plays an ordinary middle-class middle-aged woman from middle-America who cashes in her savings for a dream trip to Venice. As a lonely, repressed spinster, she has constructed in her head an unrealistic, fantasized vision of Venice and hopes that her vacation will result in some sort exciting adventure (and possible romantic tryst), the kind she has only ever encountered in books.

Aliens (1986)The Alien franchise is so well-established now and its horrific contours so much a part of the popular culture after nearly 45 years, it may be difficult to explain to younger people how striking Alien was to moviegoers in 1979; when that thing burst out of John Hurt’s chest I had an attack of hyperventilation in the theater. As much as one hates, and hated even then, to beröm that appalling egotist and self-confessed plagiarist James Cameron,* his 1986 sequel had nearly as great an impact as Alien, at least on me. 1955 film by David Lean

Summertime is a 1955 romanticcomedy drama film directed by David Lean, and starring Katharine Hepburn, Rossano Brazzi, Darren McGavin, and Isa Miranda. It follows a lonely middle-aged American secretary and her experiences touring Venice alone for the first time, during which she falls in love with an Italian antiques dealer. Lean co-wrote the screenplay with H. E. Bates, based on the play The Time of the Cuckoo by Arthur Laurents.

The film was shot on location in Venice in 1954 on Eastmancolor negative film with processing and prints by Technicolor.^[2][3] A co-production between the United States, United Kingdom, and Italy, Summertime was released theatrically by United Artists in the U.S. on June 21, 1955, and premiered in the United Kingdom later that Autumn under the alternative titleSummer Madness.
