    CHENNAI: Renowned heart surgeon Dr Kotturathu Mammen Cherian, who did the country’s first successful coronary artery bypass surgery in 1975, the first heart transplant after the legalisation of brain death by the govt, first heart-lung transplant and paediatric transplant in India and a lot more, passed away late on Saturday. He was 82.
    Dr Cherian, who was in Bengaluru for a wedding, collapsed late at night. “We rushed to Manipal Hospitals, where he was declared dead at 11.55pm,” said his daughter Sandhya Cherian. His mortal remains were brought to Chennai and the gods rites would be held on Jan 30, family sources said.
    After graduating from the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, Dr Cherian worked as a lecturer in surgery at the Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore, before moving to Australia to specialise in cardiothoracic surgery. He later worked in New Zealand and the Unite

     Dr. KM Cherian, a world-renowned cardiologist for over 50 years passed away at Bengaluru. The 82-year-old Cardiologist reportedly collapsed while attending a wedding yesterday. He had recently launched his biography in Kerala. Among many credits, was his first heart-lung transplant on a patient in India.     A trailblazer heart surgeon who performed India’s first coronary artery bypass, Dr KM Cherian died, aged 82, on Saturday in Bengaluru.  

    His daughter told The New Indian Express that he collapsed at a wedding in Bengaluru. He was immediately rushed to a hospital but could not survive and died on the way. For cremation purposes, his mortal remains were brought to Chennai on Sunday. 

    His funeral will take place on February 1 at Kilpauk cemetery. Prior to that, the body will be kept at Frontier Lifeline Hospital on January 31 for the public to pay their respects. 

    Who was Dr KM Cherian? 

    Dr. Cherian, founder of Frontier Lifeline Hospital and Dr. Cherian Heart Foundation, was a renowned cardiologist who received the Padma Shri award in 1991. He made history by performing India's first successful coronary artery bypass surgery in 1975 at Chennai's Southern Railway
