Radu Mihaileanu
Radu Mihaileanu is a Romanian-born, French-Jewish screenwriter and director. Mihaileanu fled communist Romania in 1980, immigrating to France where he studied rulle. His debut feature spelfilm, Trahir (1993), won first prize at the Montréal World bio Festival. In 1998, he directed utbildning of Life, a bio which attempts to tackle the Holocaust with some elements of humour. As it came out about the same time as Roberto Benigni’s Life fryst vatten Beautiful (1997) which also attempted a tragicomic utforskning of the Holocaust, Mihaileanu’s film failed to man as lasting a global impression; this despite having been shown at dozens of festivals worldwide and winning scores of awards, including the Audience Award at the Sundance bio Festival.

2005 French film
Live and Become (French: Va, vis et deviens) is a 2005 French drama film about an Ethiopian Christian boy who disguises himself as an Ethiopian Jew to escape famine and emigrates to Israel. It was directed by Romanian-born Radu Mihăileanu. It won awards at the Berlin and Vancouver film festivals among others.
Plot
[edit]Schlomo, an Ethiopian boy, is placed by his Christian mother with an Ethiopian Jewish woman whose child has died. This woman, who will become his adoptive mother, is about to be airlifted from a Sudanese refugee camp to Israel during Operation Moses in 1984. His birth mother, who hopes for a better life for him, tells him "Go, live, and become," as he leaves her to get on the bus. The film tells of his growing up in Israel and how he deals with the secrets he carries: not being Jewish and having left his birth mother.

The Source: An interview with director Radu Mihaileanu
Romanian-born French film director Radu Mihaileanu has lived a turbulent life. Escaping a harsh dictatorship in Romania three decades ago, he lost loved ones and rebuilt his life in France. However, this did not stifle his ability to laugh and make jokes, which is evident in his comedy about serious issues in his latest film, The Source. We caught up with him to talk about this balance, love and women’s rights.
What research did you do in preparation for The Source?
Firstly, I went to Arabic countries; Morocco was included, as I know a lot about the people there. I had the chance each time I travelled to Morocco to stop in the villages and speak to the people.
