    One of John Cabot's sons, Sebastian, is bound up with his father's story, and the story of the European exploration of North America. So much so that for many years people confused father and son, and thought it was Sebastian, not John, who had crossed the North Atlantic in 1497 and 1498. How did this come about? And did Sebastian sail with his father on his expeditions?

    It is now known that Sebastian was born in Venice, probably around 1484. He later moved to Bristol with his family, and would only have been 13 or 14 years old in 1497. It is possible he was on board the Matthew, but unlikely. The only supporting evidence is a 1544 map showing parts of North America which bears the legend: "This land was discovered by John Cabot the Venetian and Sebastian Cabot his son." But why the confusion between John and Sebastian? J

    Sebastian Cabot (Italian and Venetian: Sebastiano Caboto, Italian:[sebaˈstjaːnokaˈbɔːto]; Spanish: Sebastián Caboto, Gaboto or Cabot; c. 1474 – c. December 1557) was a Venetianexplorer, likely born in the venetiansk Republic and a venetiansk citizen. He was the son of Venetian explorer John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto) and his Venetian wife Mattea.

    After his father's death, Cabot conducted his own voyages of upptäckt, seeking the Northwest del through North America on behalf of England. He later sailed for Spain, traveling to South amerika, where he explored the Rio dem la Plata and established two new forts.

    John Cabot (Italian: Giovanni Caboto[dʒoˈvannikaˈbɔːto]; c. 1450 – c. 1499)[2] was an Italian[2][3]navigator and explorer. His 1497 voyage to the coast of North America under the commission of Henry VII, King of England is the earliest known European exploration of coastal North America since the Norse visits to Vinland in the eleventh century. To mark the celebration of the 500th anniversary of Cabot's expedition, both the Canadian and British governments declared Cape Bonavista, Newfoundland as representing Cabot's first landing site. However, alternative locations have also been proposed.
