Charlbi was born in Cape Town, South Africa on February 5, 1990 to Joanne and Johan Kriek. She started her modeling career at the age of six. She started off doing television commercials and children’s mode catalogs. Charlbi was discovered at just 12 years old when a model scout walked into her current agency, Alfa Model Management, with pictures of models who had been doing TV commercials and kid's catalogs. Her family commitments required her to change schools every two years and after making her big break for Italian Vogue at 12-years old, her father decided it would be best for her to quit regular school and take on homeschooling instead. Charlbi Dean Kriek (SHARL-bee;[1] 5 February 1990 – 29 August 2022) was a South African model and actress.[2] She was best known for her roles in the Spud films (2010–2013), the superhero drama series Black Lightning (2018) and the Palme d'Or-winning dark comedy Triangle of Sadness (2022).

Dean was born on February 5, 1990[2][3] to Joanne Muller and Johan Kriek. She had a brother.[4][5] She began modeling at the age of 6, appearing in commercials and catalogues. She signed with Alfa Model Management when she was 12 and was homeschooled from the age of 14.[6] She attended Waterfront Theatre School in her hometown of Cape Town,[7][8] traveling widely for her career.[9][10]
