Brought up into one of Haiti’s literary families, Jacques Stephen Alexis’s father, Stephen Alexis, a diplomat, was the author of Le Negre Masque which dealt with the history of Haiti. Jacques initially studied medicine in Paris as well as Port-au Prince, the capital of Haiti. After finishing his degree, he took part in the revolt of 1946 where the goal was to overthrow then president Lescot in support of freedom of the press and free elections.
Due to fear of political oppression, he fled to countries in the Middle East, China, Russia and eventually settling in Cuba. His yearn to return home to Haiti drove him to go back and stay on the northwestern part of the Island during Duvalier’s regime. It’s believed that he was ultimately arrested and perished during his captivity.

Jacques Stephen Alexis (22 April 1922 – c. 22 April 1961[1]) was a Haitian communist novelist, poet, and activist. He is best known for his novel Compère Général Soleil (1955).[2]
Biography
[edit]Alexis was born in Gonaïves, the son of journalist, historian and diplomat Stephen Alexis and Lydia Nuñez, descendant of one of Haiti's founding fathers, Jean-Jacques Dessalines. His mother was Dominican. Alexis grew up in a family in which literary and political discussions were the norm. He served as the prime minister of Haiti from 1999 to 2001 and was prime minister for a second term from 2006 to 2008 when he was dismissed due to political fallout from food riots. Alexis was born in Gonaïves, Haiti on 21 September 1947.[1] He is the great-great grandson of President Pierre Nord Alexis and Princess Marie-Louise-Amelie-Celestina Pierrot, a daughter of Prince Jean-Louis Pierrot. He attended school at Lycée Geffrard in Gonaïves (1959–1964) and later Lycée Toussaint Louverture in Port-au-Prince (1964–1966).[1] He received a grad in agricultural engineering from the State University of Haiti in 1973.
