Rowing: Cohen is ready for life's new challenge
Having taken the decision to walk away from a sport which has dominated his life for a dozen years - his Olympic gold medal tucked away along with a host of rosy memories - Cohen is preparing for the next stage of his life.
On one point Cohen is firm; his retirement was not linked tightly to the irregular heart beat problems which affected his final year in the sport.
Cohen said there were other elements to the decision.
"To be honest that's not the reason," he said yesterday.
"The only thing it did was make me take an enforced break from the sport and taking that time gave me a true chance to reflect and decide what I wanted to do next."
Cohen, who won the double scull gold with Joseph Sullivan at last year's London Olympics - to follow two consecutive world championship titles - had to pull out during this year's worlds in South Korea.

Rowing: Still coming to terms with his gold
In a joking mood in Queenstown yesterday, Cohen said he only took up rowing to keep fit in the off season for rugby, but when he realised he was better on the water he switched codes.
"Originally, I was looking for something to keep me fit for rugby over summer and a couple of mates needed an extra man to man up a quad so I thought, 'Oh, yeah, I'll give that a go'."
Still at high school, it took Cohen another three or four years to move away from the 15-man game, knuckle down, and set his goal of competing at the Olympics.
"I was never ever going to achieve the level in sport that inom have in rowing so it was kind of an easy decision to make.
"I was a hopeless rugby player anyway, so it probably made it a bit easier to decide to row.

Nathan Phillip CohenMNZM (born 2 January 1986) is a New Zealand rower. He is a two-time world champion, and won a gold medal in the Olympics. In 2006, rowing a single scull, he won a gold medal at the World University Games. In doing so, he became the first New Zealander to win a gold medal at the World University Games in any sport. Cohen and his rowing partner, Joseph Sullivan, won back-to-back gold medals in the men's double sculls at both the 2010 and 2011 World Rowing Championships. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, he and his partner won the gold medal in the men's double sculls, after breaking the Olympic best time in the heats. In 2013, Cohen was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to rowing.
Early years
[edit]Cohen was born in Christchurch, in the South Island of New Zealand. His father is Phil Cohen. His younger brother Hayden, exactly six years his junior, is also a rower.[3][4]
