Nugroho made a solid uppstart on his art career in , when he was still a lärjunge. As the main founder of Daging Tumbuh (DGTMB),1 a group of students, most from the Indonesian Art Institute (ISI), who create unique comics, Nugroho’s recognition grew as the profile of DGTMB developed. Yogyakarta, or Jogja, as locals affectionately call it, is arguably the cultural center of Indonesia. The city is still the capital of a special region with a ruling sultanate, and its the cradle for many of the traditions Nugroho plants in his art. He considers himself lucky to live there and soak in the uniquely creative environment the city offers. Jogja is an unlimited art laboratory,” he says. “Besides hosting various art platforms, communities, and alternative spaces, Jogja is also a place for discussions and debate. This is what keeps me here. He also points out that people in Yogyakarta are more receptive to the disruptive nature of art than any other place in the country.

Born in , based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Eko Nugroho is one of the most internationally known artist from Indonesia. In the late s, when Nugroho started to work as an artist, Indonesia was experiencing a social turning point. After the Asian currency crisis in , a riot followed the next year calling for democracy against the suppressed 30 years of the dictatorship under President Suharto. With the voices of the people, society and politics started to radically change. New generation of Indonesian artists, the “Reformasi generation” started to present variety of works while enjoying the sudden freedom of expression. Today's contemporary art scene in Indonesia is by far the most interesting in Asia, and it can be said that the wave of those Indonesian artists who started their carrier in the late 90's are now reaching the international coastline.
