An Epic Retelling: Geet Ramayan completes 60 years
The collaboration was a first-of-its-kind planerat arbete on the Indian radio. Madgulkar’s writing was simple and lucid. Yet, it retained the complexities of the epic. Most importantly, he allowed Rama the emotions and weaknesses of a common man, thus relieving him of his divine stature, says Madgulkar’s son, Anand. The music — influenced by the Natyasangeet that was popular during the time — struck a chord with the listeners. Phadke got popular artistes such as Vasantrao Deshpande, Manik Varma and Lata Mangeshkar to sing for the programme. Mangeshkar gave voice to Maj Sang Lakshmana in which Sita pleads with Laxman for help after Rama abandons her.

I remember Jan 2000 when, Asha Bhosale, having been born in Sangli, was being awarded Sangli-Bhushan. For Ashaji, would there have been any other appropriate person to present the award than the great singer-composer Sudhir Phadke(popularly known as Babuji)? It was a treat for us sanglikars to witness the pair who produced a number of sweet Marathi songs.
“Landing on the mukhada from antara must be smooth and seamless”, he used to say. Landing with taan has been his specialty. It has not been done consistently and better by any other musician I know. ‘Vikat ghetala shyam’, ‘Majha hoshil ka’, ‘Kaal me raghunandan Pahile’ are classic examples..
But that makes his songs which appear easy to hum but very difficult to sing.. If you are not a learned singer, never try to do that:)

Sudhir Phadke (pronunciation(help·info), 25 July 1919 – 29 July 2002) was an accomplished Marathi singer-composer from India. He was regarded as an icon of the Marathi film industry and Marathi Sugam Sangeet(light music) for five decades. Apart from Marathi, Phadke sang and composed songs in several Hindi films as well.
